Looks like the camera has an enthusiastic metering system, leaning a little towards over exposure sometimes

Hi Richard.

Yes, the Nikon D90 DOES come with a full manual. Perhaps your camera was packed on a Friday and they forgot to put it in! Go back to Currys and ask them for one.

Not sure why you can’t print the manual from the link above. It is a .pdf file and you do need to have the latest version of Adobe Reader (free program) on your computer, but it should print out fine (although there are a LOT of pages!)

Last year I bought a new Nikon D90 from Currys. The only manual that came with it was a small getting-started guide. Now I need the proper manual, I find that it’s available on the ‘net but I can’t print it. To get a hard copy I have to send £7.50 to Nikon UK.

£7.50 isn’t an issue but it’s a nuisance. Ought Nikon to be supplying complex kit such as DSLR cameras without puting a full manual in the box?

Thanks Jilly – that has really cleared things up for me. Yes the manual IS misleading – I was expecting the picture to Auto Rotate on the Monitor like it does on my iphone4. I really thought I had a faulty camera and was on the verge of taking it back…. (mind you, the term “Auto Rotate” itself is misleading).

Hi. Yes there is a black and white function. Go to the Shooting Menu (camera icon), then select Set Picture Control. Then select Monochrome.

However, you may wish to reconsider using this feature and instead take the photo in colour as normal and then convert the file to greyscale using your favourite graphics program. This gives the photo a better range of greys and also if you change your mind you still have it in colour and can compare the two.

It could be a number of things but without further information we cannot help you. Is there a card in the camera? Is the battery ok? Could you take photos ok before? what were you doing when it stopped working ok? What does the display on the LCD say?
