Have to say that photographing planes is not really my "thing" (and I think it shows in these!), but I go coz hubby likes them.
On Sunday 5th September, Duxford had a Battle of Britain air display on which we went to. The day was VERY overcast, yet still quite bright.
The air display was opened by the Red Arrows at 2pm.
Taken with my trusty Nikon D90 and a Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED NikkorLens, which was set to Shutter Priority. I used Spot Metering. ISO was on auto with a minimum of 200.
I know, I know; these photos are crap! Dark, colourless and grainy. What settings should I have used? How would YOU set your camera up for an air display on a cloudy albeit reasonably bright day?
Your comments below would be most welcome! I'll be posting my other photos taken that day later.
As usual, click on the thumbnail for the photograph.

Have just found out that I had accidentally left the white balance on cloudy. Whilst it is true that it was a cloudy day it gave the photos a rather warm tinge which was not the effect I wanted!
So, rule number 1 – check ALL your settings before shooting!
It’s probably best to leave WB on auto at air shows as the weather & light change so quickly outdoors, that you wouldn’t want to keep changing the setting whilst keeping your mind on the main exposures.
A few of these would not look out of place on the lounge wall, nice shooting.
